A Health Canada study released in 1997 revealed that, in a one-year period, the total cost of illness in Canada was estimated at more than $156.9 billion. While overall medical expenses continue to rise, pharmaceuticals represent one of the most cost-effective medical interventions. In fact, patented prescription drugs represent less than 6 percent of total direct health care expenditures.
