Boehringer Ingelheim Canada Ltd. (BICL) is a member of the Boehringer Ingelheim group of companies with international headquarters in Ingelheim, Germany. Boehringer Ingelheim is the largest 100% family-owned pharmaceutical company and ranks among the top 20 pharmaceutical companies in the world.

BICL began Canadian operations in 1972 and now has its headquarters in Burlington, Ontario with over 600 employees across Canada. BICL consists of three divisions: Prescription Medicines; Boehringer Ingelheim Research, our basic research institute (Laval, Quebec); and Vetmedica, an animal health division.

On the Human Pharmaceutical side, BICL has earned a well-deserved reputation for the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and has expanded its product portfolio to include treatments for diseases that affect the Central Nervous System, the Cardiovascular system, and other human conditions. BICL currently markets prescription drugs for the treatment of COPD (Atrovent®, Combivent®, Spiriva®), Parkinson's Disease (Mirapex®), HIV/AIDS (Viramune®), Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (Flomax®), hypertension (Micardis®), stroke (Aggrenox®).

Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada) Ltd. is proud to be a research-driven company that contributes a significant percentage of revenues to fund medicine research and development in Canada. The Patented Medicine Prices Review Board calculated that BICL's R&D-to-sales ratio for 2003 was 20.9%; a figure that exceeds the industry average and positions the company as a leader in Canadian pharmaceutical research.

Headquartered in Ingelheim, Germany, it operates globally with 145 affiliates in 44 countries and nearly 36,000 employees. Since it was founded in 1885, the family-owned company has been committed to researching, developing, manufacturing and marketing novel products of high therapeutic value for human and veterinary medicine.
