  About Rx&D

The Rx&D Health Research Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support health research in Canadian academic health centres and promote the value of health research in Canada. By apply¬ing the highest standards of scientific excellence, addressing health challenges and establishing partnerships, HRF, one of the leading private health foundations in the country, contributes significantly to the prevention and treatment of disease, to a better healthcare system and the availability for Canadians to access effective health products.

HRF becomes HRF 2006 when it changes its corporate status to become a private not-for-profit corporation.

The new research program of the newly incorporated, not-for-profit Rx&D Health Research Foundation (called HRF 2006), replaces the previous HRF Awards Program, which provided over $23 million in funding to more than 1,400 researchers across Canada since its inception in 1987.

In line with its mission, the HRF 2006 will launch each year a thematic grants program with the aim of providing significant multi-year grants on a theme chosen by its expert Scientific Advisory Committee in line with Canadians health concerns and needs. This support, which includes a research and training component, will be the object of a peer-reviewed competition, open to applications from academic and other research institutions including faculties of medicine, pharmacy and others.

The Foundation will also encourage community-based initiatives with focus targeted on young people to promote and encourage the pursuit of a health research career, and creating greater public interest and knowledge of its research activities in Canada.

Pharmaceutical researchers are employing many new strategies to address the challenges of the yet unconquered diseases and those that are emerging. Strategies, such as biotechnology, are essential components of the pharma¬ceutical industry’s ongoing efforts to develop safe and more effective medicines.

As the world competes in increasingly global knowledge-based markets, Rx&D’s Health Research Foundation is poised to contribute to the new technologies and knowl¬edge that are changing the face of drug discovery and share its excitement about the potential of health research with as broad a public as possible.
